Center for European Studies
GOALS
The main goal of the SNU EU Centre is to develop a national and East Asian hub for EU studies. The Centre will coordinate the teaching, research and outreach activities in EU affairs, and mobilize all human and financial resources through its diverse networks and partnerships, and thereby maximize a synergy effect.
Integrating legal, economic and social, political and cultural aspects of European integration in a multi-disciplinary context, the EU Center at GSIS intends to develop into Center of Academic excellence, National Hub and finally East Asian Hub.
To achieve this goal, the center is intended to serve as a vehicle for developing EU-related curriculum and teaching activities, for facilitating and developing research works on EU-related topics, for increasing the awareness of Korean public on the EU, its policy and institutions, and finally for promoting outreach activities of various kinds through its network with media and newspaper institutions, publications, conferences and other cultural activities. In this regard, the center’s activity will be targeted for broad public including policy makers and business circle, opinion leaders and the media world let alone the academic community.
Secondly, the center will reflect the bilateral policy agenda between the EU and Korea, which culminated with the EU Framework Agreement on trade and cooperation with Korea and its attached political declaration announced in 1996 involving provisions for strengthening economic and trade relations as well as for developing broad-based cooperation activities.
The center will finally conduct researches to promote East Asian integration, drawing lessons from European integration. The ASEM related activities are in this category. Moreover, Korea is a gateway to Northeast Asia. As witnessed by the Presidential address delivered at the University of Paris Sorbonne, December 2004, Korean government’s top priority policy is to establish peace and prosperity in East Asia and to this end the learning of the European integration process is inevitable.
The SNU EU Centre will also reflect the bilateral policy agenda between the EU and Korea, which culminated not only with the EU Framework Agreement on trade and cooperation with Korea and its attached political declaration announced in 1996 but also the Korea-EU FTA effectuated in 2011, strengthening economic and trade relations as well as developing broad-based cooperation activities.
The SNU EU Centre strives to conduct research to promote East Asian integration, drawing lessons from European integration.
