The Insitute of International Affairs has released the new Pacific Report No. 7. In this issue, senior research fellow Jaehyon Lee at Asan Institute for Policy Studies contributed an article titled ' U.S.-China Rivalry and Australia'.

Dr. Lee suggests that Australia faces a dilemma, dependent on the United States for security and on China for economics.

Australia has been closely cooperating with the U.S. as an ally for its and the region’s security since 1951 and China has been its largest trading partner since 2007.

However, Australia joined the U.S. in pressuring China in the mid-2010s, leading to conflicts due to de facto trade sanctions initiated by China.

The relationship with China has improved since the Australian Labor Party's ascent to power in 2022, but this improvement is attributed to economic necessity rather than a shift in strategic position towards China.
