The Institute of International Affairs has released the new Pacific Report No. 21.

In this issue, Professor Young Nam Cho of the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University contributed an article titled <Prospects for U.S.-China Relations in the ‘Trump 2.0 Era’>.

Professor Cho explains that in the short term, the U.S. may gain an upper hand by exerting pressure on China, but in the mid-to-long term, accumulating policy missteps by the U.S. could shift the balance in favor of China.

The U.S.-led China containment policy centered on economic sanctions could encounter various issues, undermining its effectiveness.

According to Professor Cho, China will be focusing on fostering advanced industries and establishing a robust innovation system to achieve mid- to long-term success in its technological and economic competition with the United States.’

Although China's investment volume decreased after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Belt and Road Initiative remains a key policy for China to expand its influence in response to the U.S.

In addition, Professor Cho comments that improving Korea-China relations and leveraging this improvement to strengthen South Korea's negotiating power with the U.S. could serve as a strategic approach for South Korea.
