The Institute of International Affairs has released the new Pacific Report No. 19.
In this issue, Dr. Jaehyon Lee of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies contributed an article titled 'Far Yet Close: The Long-standing Future of Cooperation Between Australia and South Korea.'
Dr. Lee explains that the positive image of South Korea in Australia has steadily increased since 2020, surpassing the U.S. in 2023, and by 2024, it led by a margin of five points (64:59).
Strengthening strategic cooperation with Australia could serve as a starting point for expanding South Korea’s regional role.
According to Dr. Lee, over time, the ability of the U.S. to project power from afar, maintain the balance of power, and uphold stability in the region seems increasingly difficult.
In addition, Dr. Lee comments it is important to view defense industry cooperation not merely as an opportunity for exports but as a channel for building strategic trust between South Korea and Australia.
