The Institute of International Affairs has released the new Pacific Report No. 20.

In this issue, Professor Hyeyoung Lee of the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University contributed an article titled 'Israel-Hamas War and ‘Public Interest Litigation in International Law’: Recent Trends in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).'

Professor Lee explains that new attempts to overcome the limitations of effectiveness exposed by the current system are unfolding within the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with efforts to maintain peace and protect human rights in the international community.

In December 2023, South Africa filed a case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), claiming that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

According to Professor Lee, since the mid-20th century, international norms concerning the "common interest" shared by the global community, such as international peace, human rights, and environmental protection, have begun to develop more substantively.

In addition, Professor Lee comments it is easy to foresee that such litigation will only increase as global crises like war, genocide, and climate change persist.
