In this issue, Professor Seong-Ho Sheen, Dean of GSIS and Director of IIA at Seoul National University, contributed an article titled <The Gyeongju APEC Summit and the ROK’s Pragmatic Diplomacy>.
Professor Sheen explains that South Korea not only hosted the main plenary sessions but also provided venues for key bilateral meetings, including the U.S.–China summit, thereby presenting its potential as a new bridging role within the international community.
According to Professor Sheen, there were also surprise achievements—South Korea established a foothold for securing two core technologies of the 21st century: nuclear power and artificial intelligence.
Professor Sheen comments that both President Trump and President Lee Jae-myung are scheduled to visit China in April next year, and it is possible that a new round of diplomatic drama surrounding the Korean Peninsula could unfold around that time.
