Evaluation Rules
Article 1 (Purpose)
This regulations specifies the evaluation process on submitted articles to 『Journal of International and Area Studies (JIAS)』.
Article 2 (Evaluation Process)
Published articles are selected according to following principles.
3. The Chief of the Editorial Board, along with the board members, select at least two evaluators who are qualified to review the submitted articles.
Article 3 (Decisions on the Evaluation)
1. The Chief of Editorial Board notifies the evaluation results to authors: Publishable, Publishable after partial revision, Reexamination, Un-publishable.
2. Editorial Board encloses detailed statements of evaluation in order to contribute author’s modification.
3. The submitted articles are evaluated once in principle. However, in case of reexamination, evaluation can be extended.
4. Articles with ‘Publishable after partial revision’ must go through modification process. When an author sends revised articles to the Editorial Board, the Editorial Board reevaluates the articles and collects final decision from the reviewers.
5. Articles with ‘Reexamination’ go through the whole evaluation process from the top.
6. Articles with ‘Un-publishable’ will not be returned to the author. The author only gets the evaluation result.
7. Authors who have objections to the decision of the Editorial Board can put in a demurrer to the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board will examine the complaints and when it verifies adequacy, reexamination with reviewers who did not participate the previous evaluation process proceeds.
8. Evaluation results take into consideration the following evaluation table.
• A: Publishable • B: Publishable after partial revision • C: Reexamination • D: Un-publishable

Article 4 (Evaluation Standards)『JIAS』selects publishable articles according to the following evaluation standards.
1. Validity of the research subject
2. Adequacy of the research method
3. Logicality of the opinion and its flow
4. Level of contribution to academia
5. Coincidence with guidelines and requirements for paper
Article 5 (Publication of the Articles)
1. The Editorial Board makes final decision on publication with the articles reviewed accordingly.
2. Authors who have objections to the decision of the Editorial Board can put in a demurrer to the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board will examine the complaints and when it verifies adequacy, reexamination with reviewers who did not participate the previous evaluation process will be assigned.
Article 6 The Editorial Board will determine cases not mentioned above.
Submission Rules
Article 1 (Qualification as Authors, and Categorization for manuscripts)
1. Researchers, scholars and experts in international trade, international cooperation, area studies and Korean studies are qualified as authors to submit the articles.
2. Submitted manuscripts will be categorized as articles, reports, research trends, research notes, review and etc.
3. Depending on the edition, the Editorial Board can set different categories.
Article 2 (Submitting a Manuscript)
1. Manuscripts should be submitted via e-mail to jias@snu.ac.kr or uploaded to the Journal’s submission site at https://iia.jams.or.kr/
2. Manuscripts should be submitted with the author’s curriculum vitae.
3. Manuscripts for submission must be original and previously unpublished in other academic journals and books.
4. Articles should follow the guidelines for writing articles.
Article 3 (Deadlines for Article Submissions)
1. Manuscript submission and reviewing process are on a rolling basis.
2. Manuscript submission final deadlines for each journal are April 30, and October 30.
Article 4 (Copyrights for Articles)
1. For all the published articles in 『JIAS』, 『JIAS』has ownership for the copyright, and authors retain ownership of the copyright for their articles. Thus, for the citing articles, the Editorial Board’s approval is required.
2. Submitted manuscripts will not be returned.
Article 5 (Others) For others the Editorial Board will decide. For any other issues not stated above, the Editorial Board shall decide.
Article 6 (Additional Clause) This regulation is revised on September 5, 2022.
Regulations on Research Ethics
Article 1 (Purpose)
This regulation specifies the ethical principles and standards, and the disciplinary measures against violations of them applying to those submitting papers to 『Journal of International and Area Studies (JIAS) 』published by Seoul National University’s Institute of International Affairs (will be mentioned as the “Editorial Board” hereinafter).
Article 2 (Principle)
1. The “contributor” and the “evaluator” should contribute and evaluate according to the ethics and conscience as a scholar.
2. The “evaluator” should evaluate the submitted papers with utmost fairness, and should protect confidentiality. Also, the evaluator should report immediately to the editorial board if he or she notices any possible violation of research ethics according to Article 3.
Article 3 (Violation of Research Ethics)
1. The “contributor” should not forge by making up facts or data.
2. The “contributor” should not use others’ ideas and research without justifiable approval or citation.
3. The “contributor” should not exaggerate, underestimate, delete nor modify the data deliberately.
4. The “contributor” should not submit a paper that was already published in another journal or submit one whose content is closely similar to it.
5. The Editorial Board will make the decision on whether violation of research ethics has occurred if more than half attended and more than two-thirds of it agrees.
6. The “contributor” should invest with rights of the authors in case they contributed to the articles either scientifically or technically. The “contributor”, however, should not invest with rights of the authors in other way.
7. When the “contributor” wants to publish the article that has already been published in 『JIAS』.
8. to other academic journals, the “contributor” must get approval from the Editorial Board, then should specify that the article’scopyright is in 『JIAS』.
Article 4 (Measures against Violation part1)
If it has been decided that violation has occurred during the evaluation process, or even after published, measures will be taken as follows:
1. Editorial Board calls for ethics committee with less than 6 members.
2. A preliminary will be carried out to find out whether there is a need for further investigation on the violation.
3. A main survey will be carried out to confirm the facts regarding violation.
4. After the main survey, the report on violation and the findings during investigation will be made. If it has been decided that violation has occurred during the evaluation process, or even after published, measures will be taken as follows:
① Editorial Board calls for ethics committee with less than 6 members.
② A preliminary will be carried out to find out whether there is a need for further investigation on the violation.
③ A main survey will be carried out to confirm the facts regarding violation.
④ After the main survey, the report on violation and the findings during investigation will be made.
Article 5 (Measures against Violation part2)
1. If it has been decided that violation has occurred based on Article 3, measures will be taken as follows:
2. Contributing papers to any of the Institute of International Affairs’ journals will be prohibited for 5 years.
3. The violation will be reported to relevant organizations such as the Korea Research Foundation.
Article 6 (Guidelines for the Editorial Board)
1. By issuing the Regulations on Research Ethics, the institute will provide the “contributor” with an opportunity to correct any possible violation.
2. The members of the Editorial board will take full responsibility on the decision of publication and should do their best endeavors to make article professional.
3. The members of the Editorial board should adhere objectivity and fairness while treating submitted articles.
4. The members of the Editorial board should not reveal any information regarding the “contributor” and submitted articles.
5. If the terms are not satisfied, the Chief of the Editorial Board can dismiss the members of the Editorial Board.
Article 7(Guidelines for the Evaluators)
1. Evaluators should review the submitted articles within a given period.
2. Evaluators should review the submitted articles subjectively, and should not depreciate the articles even when the articles hold different view than him or herself.
3. Evaluators should fill in evaluation form.
4. Evaluators should not reveal any information regarding the submitted articles.
Article 8 The Editorial Board will determine cases not mentioned above.
Article 7 (Additional Clause)
This regulation is enacted from Oct 1, 2010.
Editing and Publication Rules
Article 1 (Title)
The title of this regulation is Editing and Publication Rules of the 『Journal of International and Area Studies (JIAS) 』
Article 2 (Purpose)
The purpose 『JIAS』is to promote academic researches related to international commerce, international cooperation, area studies and Korean studies and inform the results of these researches and studies by publishing outstanding articles related in these areas.
Article 3 (Publication Terms, Language and Publisher)
1. 『JIAS』is published in English by the Institute of International Affairs of the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University.
2. 『JIAS』is published biannually on June 30, and December 30.
Article 4 (Editorial Board)
1. Editorial Board: The Editorial Board including Chief Editor, Vice Chief Editor, Board Members, Editorial Assistant, and Assistants are organized to manage editing and publishing works of 『JIAS』.
2. Selecting Editorial Board Members, and Terms.
① The Head of Institute of international affairs at the Graduate School of International Studies will nominate the chief editoramong professors at the Graduate School of International Studies. Nomination will be to a professor who has extensive research achievements and is passionate about publishing the journal. After the nomination, the dean will appoint the chief editor among these candidates.
② The Chief editor will have 2-year terms, and members can serve for consecutive terms.
③ The Chief editor will nominate the board members with the approval of the majority of other board members, and the head of Institute of International Affairs will appoint the board members.
④ Board members will have 2-year terms, and members can serve for consecutive terms. The Chief Editor can request to change a member if necessary, and the process of changing board member will be held through the editorial board meetings. In case of member vacancy, through the same process, the Chief Editor appoints the new board member.
⑤ The Chief Editor assigns editorial assistants for assisting communication and works with the Editorial Board.
3. Role of the Editorial Board
① The Chief Editor has complete responsibility for the editing and publishing works of 『JIAS』
② The Editorial Board evaluates important matters such as editorial policy, published articles, reviewing process of articles, publishing rules, amending rules, and other suggestions.
4. Meetings
① The Chief Editor can call for a meeting if necessary, to discuss and decide on editing and publishing works with editorial boardmembers.
② Exchanged decisions and opinions among chief editor, vice chief editor, and members by phone calls, e-mails, mails, oronline can also be reflected in the results for decisions regarding editing works.
Article 5 (Copyrights)
Copyrights for published articles in 『JIAS』belong to the Editorial Board of 『JIAS』.
Article 6 (Others)
The Editorial Board has discretion to decide upon other details and issues that are not stated in the rules.
