The Insitute of International Affairs has released the new Pacific Report No. 6. In this issue, Professor Yoon Ah Oh at the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University contributed an article titled 'What Kind of Great Power Partner? The Issue of Trust in the U.S.-China Contest for Influence in Southeast Asia'. Professor Yoon Ah Oh analyzes that the countries of Southeast Asia have different structural distrust towards the United States and China. Regarding China's 'intent' to rise peacefully, Southeast Asian countries are interpreted to have skepticism, while also harboring doubts about the 'will' of the United States to engage in security matters in East Asia. Professor Yoon Ah Oh predicts that the issue of structural distrust is challenging to resolve, but anticipates that Southeast Asian countries will pursue regional stability and economic interests through maritime security cooperation and diversification strategies within supply chains with countries like South Korea, Japan, and the EU.
