IIA Pacific Report June 2023 No.3
The third issue of the Pacific Report, presented by the Institute of International Affairs(IIA), has been published. In this issue, Professor Jihwan Hwang, the professor in the Department of International Relations at the University of Seoul, contributed an article titled "What the ‘Washington Declaration’ Means for U.S. Extended Deterrence and North Korean Nuclear Issues." He highlights that while the 'Washington Declaration' may enhance the capacity to deter deliberate provocations by North Korea, it fails to propose measures that address the potential risk of accidental conflicts arising from the advancement of North Korea's nuclear capabilities. He further emphasizes that unless North Korea is denuclearized or its nuclear capabilities are effectively controlled, the possibility of a crisis on the Korean Peninsula stemming from North Korea's nuclear program will not diminish. The third issue of the Pacific Report will serve as a valuable reference for students interested in international politics, security, and extended deterrence.
